Keeping the Legal Information Center on Track
“My title is
Technical Services Team
Leader in the Legal Information Center. In a nutshell, I make sure that all the behind the scenes operations of the LIC run smoothly, from ordering materials to processing them,” says librarian Sara Gilles.
Originally from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, she graduated from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and earned her Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina. She worked as a solo librarian at Southern Methodist College in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She then served as the Cataloging Librarian at the University of South Carolina School of Law, where she later became the Acquisitions and Serials Librarian and the Technical Services Department Head before coming to Widener.
A passionate football fan, Sara makes no secret of her allegiance to the Green Bay Packers and the University of South Carolina Gamecocks. She is also glad to be back in the land of hockey and looks forward to rooting for the Philadelphia Flyers.
Since coming to Widener in the fall of 2010, Sara has taken an active role in a variety of professional organizations. She is a member-at-large of the Mid-Atlantic Innovative Users Group and an advisory board member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Special Libraries Association, serving as the chapter’s 2011 Public Relations Chairperson. She also serves on several American Association of Law Libraries Special Interest Section Committees, 2012.
“I like to volunteer to give back to the profession,” says Sara of her work with the various professional groups that she gives her time to.
Sara feels that preservation is a vital part of her responsibilities as a librarian, noting that one of her primary motivations is “making sure that resources are available for future generations, and that old resources are available in some format.”
As the leader of the library’s technical services staff, she also feels that she has an important responsibility to the people who help keep the library functioning, saying, “I need to make sure that I’m a strong advocate for my staff and that their voice is heard.”
