Karen Durkin is Director of Career Development at the Harrisburg Campus of Widener University School of Law. Director Durkin received her B.A. in Political Science from St. Joseph’s College in 1976 and her J.D. from Widener University School of Law in 1979.
Director Durkin was a partner in the Hershey, Pennsylvania, firm of James, Smith, Durkin & Connelly, LLP from 1987 until 2003, with concentrations in civil litigation and insurance law. She was previously employed as a managing attorney at Aetna Casualty & Surety Company from 1983 - 1987, where her responsibilities included insurance defense litigation, developing and maintaining an in-house litigation program for the company and providing legal education to the claim personnel in the Harrisburg region. Director Durkin also worked as counsel to Unemployment Compensation Board of Review for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Labor and Industry from 1980-1983. She served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the Honorable Carl Goldstein in Delaware from 1978-1979.
Director Durkin is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania and the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association and the Dauphin County Bar Association. She was appointed as an Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association in 1995 and has served as an Arbitrator and Arbitration panel chairman for the Court of Common Pleas of Dauphin County. She is one of the Founding Members and Masters of the William W. Lipsitt Inn of Court and currently serves the Inn as Vice-President.
